Located in Newport Beach, Big Canyon lies within the area roughly bounded by San Joaquin Hills Road, MacArthur Boulevard, Jamboree Road, and Ford Road, essentially northeast of the city’s main shopping district at Fashion Island.
Access to the gated part of Big Canyon is controlled via two 24-hour guard gates, both situated on San Joaquin Hills Road. These gates lead into a loop road called Big Canyon Drive, which circles through the community.
Canyon to Community: The Origins of Big Canyon

The land that is now Big Canyon was once a natural canyon. Over time, parts of it even served as a dump or landfill. The transition from “canyon” to “community” was dramatic. By the early 1970s, the area was reimagined for residential and recreational use.

The community was developed by a coalition of builders and developers—including the Irvine Company, which owned much of the land, and builders like Broadmoor Homes, Deane Development Company, and McLain Development—who laid out custom-home lots, condos, and other housing around a planned golf course.

The official grand opening of the club was June 16, 1971; the clubhouse facilities opened shortly after in spring 1972.

Over time, the canyon-turned-neighborhood, now spanning roughly 414 acres, evolved to include multiple parks, greenbelts, and, of course, the private golf course.
What started as a natural canyon and even a dump was reimagined in the 1970s as an upscale, master-planned residential and golf community designed from scratch to offer luxury living anchored by a private course and club.

The Golf Course & Club Exclusivity
Big Canyon Country Club is a private club centered around an 18-hole golf course and is considered one of the more exclusive golfing environments in Orange County. Membership is not included with homeownership and must be applied for separately.
There are multiple types of memberships available, and applicants are typically required to be sponsored by two current members. Due to the club’s popularity and limited capacity, the waiting list is estimated to be around seven years.
The club maintains a high level of privacy, and exact membership fees are not publicly published, reinforcing its reputation as a highly exclusive and closely held private club.
While the Big Canyon Country Club is a defining feature of the community, it’s important to understand that homeownership and club membership are two separate things. Purchasing a home in Big Canyon does not automatically grant access to the club or its amenities.
2025 Renovation Project: What’s Happening Now

As of April 2025, the Club has filed a formal renovation plan for the golf course. The project primarily entails replacing aging irrigation infrastructure, correcting drainage deficiencies, and updating the course to modern standards.

During the renovation, the course closed starting August 4, 2025. The project is slated to finish by early spring 2026, with a planned reopening around August 2026 (depending on weather conditions and the grow-in period needed for turf).

The renovation aims not to expand the course footprint or add new holes, but to improve sustainability, drainage, and playability while preserving the existing course layout.
This renovation marks a major update, the most substantial since the 1998 enhancements, and shows a long-term commitment to keeping the club and course well-maintained and relevant for future decades.
Big Canyon is more than a gated community. What began as a natural canyon, and was developed in the early 1970s, has evolved into one of Newport Beach’s most well-known golf-oriented communities. Even today, ongoing updates and renovations show how the area continues to grow while still preserving its value, lifestyle, and sense of community.
